Jürgen Windeler assumes position of IQWiG Director
New IQWiG Director expresses great appreciation to Peter Sawicki for work accomplished in establishment of Institute
On 1 September 2010 Jürgen Windeler assumes his position as the Director of the German Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG). He succeeds Peter Sawicki, whose contract expired on 31 August.
Professor Dr med. Jürgen Windeler (born in 1957) studied medicine in Göttingen and Lübeck. From 1985 to 1988 he worked as an assistant doctor and fellowship holder of the German Research Foundation at the Universities of Göttingen and Düsseldorf, as well as at the Ferdinand Sauerbruch Hospital, Wuppertal. He then worked as a researcher at the Ruhr University of Bochum until 1993, where he habilitated (qualified as a university lecturer) in Medical Biometry and Clinical Epidemiology.
In 1993 he became Deputy Head of the Department of Medical Biometry at the Ruprecht Karls University of Heidelberg. In 1999 he was appointed Director of the Department of Evidence-based Medicine at the Medical Review Board of the Statutory Health Insurance Funds (MDS), Essen, where he became Chief Physician and Deputy Chief Executive in 2004.
Since 2001 he has held an extraordinary professorship at the Ruhr University of Bochum.
Stefan Lange remains Deputy Director
Privatdozent (Private Lecturer) Dr med. Stefan Lange (born in 1962) remains Deputy Director of IQWiG. Stefan Lange studied medicine in Düsseldorf and, after clinical practice, worked as a researcher in the Department of Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology at the Ruhr University of Bochum between 1993 and 2004. He is practically a founding member of IQWiG and has worked at the Institute since 2004. He headed the Department of Non-drug Interventions until 2007 and has been Deputy Director since 2005.
