IQWiG invites to its Autumn Symposium 2014

Evidence-based health care: Where should the journey go to? / What can IQWiG contribute to the challenges and what can it do better?

The introduction of the first disease management programmes was the starting point for providing a legal basis for evidence-based medicine in Germany. Since 2004, the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) – fulfilling its legal mandate – has been investigating the medical evidence on the benefit of examination and treatment methods for patients.

Today, evidence-based medicine has gained noticeable importance; the term is widely used and broadly discussed. However, its actual impact on health care still remains unclear in many areas. Evidence-based health care still has great potential for development, meaning it can and must be improved. In its next Autumn Symposium, IQWiG will therefore look into the focus and the challenges of evidence-based health care in the next ten years.

On the occasion of IQWiG’s 10th anniversary, the Autumn Symposium will therefore take a look into the future: On 28 November, national and international experts from research and the health care system will present their perspective on the question of the future focus of evidence-based health care. The speakers are David Haslam, Chair of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), and Jean-Luc Harousseau, Chair of the French Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS), as well as Reinhard Busse from the Technical University (TU) Berlin and Gabriele Meyer from the University of Halle-Wittenberg.

The second day, 29 November, deals with the challenges IQWiG will face in the next ten years: What can the Institute contribute to the future challenges in evidence-based health care? And what can it do better to improve the impact on health care of research results oriented towards patients and use in everyday practice? These questions will be answered by Frank Ulrich Montgomery from the physicians’ perspective and by Volker Stollorz from a science journalist’s perspective. Jens Spahn will present the health policy perspective and Martin Scherer will provide a scientific perspective from general medicine.

People who would like to participate in this event can register up to 31 October 2014. Prior registration is required for this event.
