Medicine put to the test

The independent Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (Institut für Qualität und Wirtschaftlichkeit im Gesundheitswesen, IQWiG) examines the benefits and harms of medical interventions for patients. We provide information about the advantages and disadvantages of examination and treatment methods in the form of scientific reports and easily understandable health information.

Trustworthiness of observational data

Observational data are increasingly being used for health technology assessment. But how reliable are such data? At IQWiG in Dialogue, current methodological approaches – including the use of propensity scores – and criteria for scientific validity were discussed in depth.

Easily understandable information for the general public

InformedHealth.org is the English-language version of the German website Gesundheitsinformation.de. By publishing this bilingual website, IQWiG fulfils part of its legal mandate to inform the general public about health issues. By offering a wide range of different topics, the website addresses both patients and (healthy) consumers.

Low back pain

Most of us know what low back pain feels like. It usually starts suddenly and then goes away again on its own after a few days or weeks. Low back pain is only rarely a sign of a serious medical problem. Regular exercise can help prevent back problems from returning.

Head lice

Head lice are tiny parasites that live in our hair and feed on blood from our scalp. Their bites can itch. They usually lay their eggs close to the scalp, at the roots of the hair. Different products and techniques can be used to safely and effectively get rid of them.
