The German Federal Ministry of Health has commissioned IQWiG to produce decision aids for decision-making situations relevant to pregnancy and childbirth as part of the ‘All about health and childbirth’ action plan. The information will be published in stages at www.informedhealth.org/birth.
Decision aids will be created for these key areas:
- Past the due date: Wait and see, or induce labour? (German-language version already published)
- Pain in childbirth: What can help? (German-language version already published)
- Giving birth after a caesarean section: Vaginal birth or another caesarean section?
- Breech position: Turn the baby from the outside?
- Breech position: Vaginal birth or caesarean section?
- Birth: Where should your child be born?
- Miscarriage: What are the medical options (dilation and curettage, or wait and see)?
These decision aids are embedded in accompanying information and, if necessary, supplemented by formats that reach different subgroups of pregnant women and support counselling by health care professionals.
The decision aids will be published online in German and English at www.gesundheitsinformation.de and www.informedhealth.org, and also made available as downloadable and printable documents for use in clinical practice.
